You could donate it to an organization that gives it to women in bad domestic situation or in shelters. Even if your plan expired, as long as the battery stays charged you are still able to use the phone to call 911. Call a local shelter or maybe the local police can help you find out where to go with this.
There are also organizations donating them to senior citizens.Just remember to clear out the info on the phone that you wouldn’t want nobody else to have. It’s tax deductible.

I’m assuming you are in the UK, but here in the US you can donate old phones to women’s shelters. They can be programmed so that they can only dial 911 for emergencies at no charge. Also, some groups recycle the battery.
