Writer Dominick Dunne left court, treated for pain

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Celebrity crime writer Dominick Dunne was released from a hospital Monday after being stricken with pain in the courtroom in the O.J. Simpson armed robbery-kidnapping trial. Dunne, 82, returned to his hotel suite a few hours after being taken to the hospital.

Reached by telephone, he told The Associated Press he was diagnosed with an infection, which was being handled with medication. He said he hoped to return to the trial Tuesday.

“I’m feeling fine,” said Dunne, whose son, filmmaker Griffin Dunne, flew in from Los Angeles. Dunne left the courtroom after a court marshal noticed his distress.

He was checked by paramedics in the hallway before he was wheeled away on a gurney, sitting up and talking. The Vanity Fair magazine writer has spent decades covering society and celebrity trials, including Simpson’s murder trial in which he was acquitted in 1995 of killing his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman.

Dunne has been fighting bladder cancer and has said in recent interviews that the current Simpson trial would likely be his last. He has said he plans to write his memoirs.

“I’m a fighter. I’m not giving up,” he told The Associated Press on Saturday.

Dunne has said he plans to return to New York at the end of the week for medical tests.

Pamela Anderson: “My boobs had a career, I was there for the ride”

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Canadian actress Pamela Anderson has revealed that it was her boobs that had a career all along, and that she was there just for the ride.

From having appeared in movies and posed in some ads, to being the centerpiece in the Playboy magazine, Anderson sure thinks highly of her breasts.

“Apparently, I’ve nicknamed my breasts Pancho and Lefty. But that’s just not true, sadly,” the Daily Mail quoted her as saying.

“In the flesh, I don’t think they’re that magnificent at all, but something happens when they appear on screen - it’s like they expand or something.

“But that’s it for them now, I think. I wouldn’t get anything done to them again, because I tend to think about my health a lot more now than I ever did before.

“When I first got a boob job it was because everyone else was getting theirs done, and I didn’t put a great deal of thought into the whole process.

“Then I got the implants removed after my divorce (from Lee) in a kind of ‘I’ll show him’ way, except I really missed them myself, so I put them back in. But all in all, I’d say they’ve had a pretty good career. I’ve basically been tagging along for the ride,” she added.

Led Zeppelin may replace Robert Plan with new singer

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

English rock band Led Zeppelin will apparently replace lead singer Robert Plan if he failed to join the band on tour.

Zep guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist John Paul Jones and drummer Jason Bonham have been busy recently rehearsing in West London’s Ritz Studio and using stand-in vocalists.

Plant has refused to take part in any practice sessions as he is currently committed to his side project with country singer Alison Krauss.

“Jimmy, Jason and John are determined a tour will go ahead next year,” The Sun quoted a source, as saying.

“They’ve been rehearsing frequently in London and the band is really gelling.

“Obviously they want the original frontman to join them on the road but he still won’t commit.

“They will be finalising plans for shows over the next couple of months and will tell Robert that if he doesn’t want to be involved they will go ahead without him,” the source added.

‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ a tongue-in-cheek slice of life

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

“Bachna Ae Haseeno”; Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Deepika Padukone, Minissha Lamba; Director: Siddharth Anand; Rating: ***
bachna-ae-haseeno1 Bachna Ae Haseeno a tongue-in-cheek slice of life
Let’s get real. Commitment phobia is endemic among 20-something urban yuppies, especially in the metros. Siddharth Anand, a master at depicting urban mores - “Salaam Namaste”, “Tara Rum Pum” - this time pulls out all stops to expose the suave urbane heel who cannot feel above the waist.

Raj (must Ranbir Kapoor be called that every time?) is a man on the path to redemption. That of course comes later, much later in this elaborate but tightly-edited and engaging comment on the prowling dude’s demoniacal insensitivity towards girls who give him the chance to dance into their lives.

There is ’salvage’ grace in Ranbir’s redemptive journey from cad to closet-saint who wants to set things right in the lives of the women he has wronged. One of these scorned women makes him her glorified slave in scenic Capri. And boy, does Bipasha Basu pull out all stops. The other hurt lady just makes him dance to a tortuous Bhangra tune in Amritsar. All’s well that mends well.

Ranbir inadvertently turns the whole concept of romantic love as propagated by Shah Rukh Khan in “Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge” and its zillion spin-offs on its head. Love now can easily be taken to bed. Though no one is thinking of sleep. Not the characters, not the audience.

The first episode with the starry-eyed Mahee (Minissha Lamba, suitably starry-eyed) is a rather diverting homage to Aditya Chopra’s “DDLJ”. That’s a pretty auto-erotic thing to do considering Chopra is this film’s producer. But then, you win some when you try to be winsome. Ghar ka khana served up with affection is not unacceptable.

Ranbir and Minissha are pretty much taken through the same Swiss terrain as Shah Rukh and Kajol in the earlier film. Even the circumstances created to bring them together can’t be told apart. Except that this boy-man is out to have a ‘good’ time with the girl who lives in a bubble.

There’s a bit of Ken Ghosh’s “Ishq Vishq” combined with a dash of Sajid Khan’s “Hey Babby” here. You know the hero who takes the innocent romantic girl for a ride will find his comeuppance. She shows up an hour later.

Some of the sassiest, sauciest and smartest lines come in the second overture of this anti-romantic comedy when Ranbir, now 20-something and suitably hormone-driven courts and mates Bipasha with ferocious intensity.

Ranbir has been there, done ‘em all. He lives the characters to the ‘jilt’, swathes the character in the cruelly cool quirks that make utter self-centredness a fashion statement in contemporary societies.

One of the film’s most stirring moments is when Bipasha is shown sitting on the steps of her marriage venue in her bridal finery waiting for her bridegroom to turn up, her mehndi getting washed in the rain.

A very Raj Kapoor thing to do in a film that’s all about being cool and finally falling flat on one’s face when the hero meets his match.

Deepika Padukone as the statuesque but spunky cabbie in Sydney has the shortest feminine presence in this made-to-order Ranbir vehicle. She gets to mouth the best throwaway lines and to hit the commitment-phobic hero where it hurts the most. And we don’t mean below the belt.

The director has the guts to show his hero as a man thoroughly exposed in his self-seeking egocentricity. Ranbir doesn’t spare the character. He penetrates Raj’s nerve-centre and portrays him as a smooth-talking charlatan who’s looking for trouble in shapely places.

Ranbir plays the Casanova with just the right dollops of dips and curves. The fact that he has already done it all in an abundant flourish in “Saawariya” doesn’t take away from the sincerity of the performance. Watch his surprise when he sees himself cry after Deepika rejects him. No one has done this before.

There are any number of scenes displaying inspired cinema in this work of cyber-art. The characters are etched with a contemporary air without making them overly illustrative. Bipasha’s turn as a wannabe supermodel ready to chuck it all for marriage only to be jilted at the altar is notably powerful.

What the script says about a career women is that sometimes male insensitivity forces their true m?tier out of a woman. An interesting thought, and one that the narrative holds in place with grace on Bipasha’s expressive face.

But the most interesting female character is Deepika’s. A self-willed, humorous and gritty cabbie, she drives the Casanova round the bend and beyond. Deepika exudes a reined-in grace. She is the future of Bollywood.

Hiten Paintal, playing that age-old thankless part of the hero’s friend, joins the ranks of the natural-born scene-stealing supporters like Ninad Kamath, Kabeer Sadnah and Vishal Singh.

The film has been beautifully shot. The azure blue oceans of Italy form a telling contrast to the bronzed, tanned and probably tattooed actors who clutter the Swiss, Italian and desi locales.

Cleverly crafted and structured to contour the severely flawed characters, “Bachna Ae Haseeno” is not meant to be a mammoth social comment on love and marriage. But in its own tongue-in-cheek manner it manages to say plenty about life in the fast lane.

Sony finds “Solace” closer to Thanksgiving

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Harry split the scene, so 007 moved in for the kill.

Sony on Thursday moved its next James Bond film, “Quantum of Solace,” back one week to November 14. That move is closely tied to the departure of Warner Bros.’ “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” from the November 21 release berth.

Just last week, the sixth “Potter” film newly planted its domestic flag on July 17, as executives sought to fill a hole in Warners‘ summer 2009 slate. The most immediate response to that move was Summit Entertainment’s decision to move its youth-targeted vampire film “Twilight” up three weeks into the vacated “Potter” slot.

Now Sony executives — who had been wishing for a release date closer to Thanksgiving and the holiday boxoffice season for their next Bond release — have taken “Solace” to a suddenly much more attractive slot. Bond’s previous perch, on November 7, was intended to maximize pre-”Potter” playtime.

Scratch that worry.

“‘Harry Potter’ moving out gave us an opportunity to get a little closer to the holidays, which has always been the traditional Bond spot,” Sony worldwide marketing and distribution chairman Jeff Blake said. “Bond has a really good history of not only playing through Thanksgiving but going deep into the Christmas holidays.”

Sony unspooled the last Bond film, the Daniel Craig-starring “Casino Royale,” on November 17, 2006, and it was still playing in about 1,100 theaters between Christmas and New Year’s, Blake noted.

Sony holds worldwide theatrical rights to the Eon-produced Bond franchise, with longtime Bond distributor MGM controlling all post-theatrical windows.

Three other domestic wide releases are set for November 14 — Fox’s Baz Luhrmann-helmed adventure “Australia,” starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman; the MGM comedy “Soul Men,” toplined by Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac; and Overture’s Freddy Rodriguez-starring “Nothing Like the Holidays.”

Universal’s comedy “Role Models,” with Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott, also had been set for November 14. But just a few hours after word spread of Sony’s move with its Bond film, Universal moved the comedy up one week to November 7, where the Paramount-distributed DreamWorks Animation sequel “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” now represents its sole wide-release rival.

Besides “Twilight,” two other domestic wide releases are set for November 21. Those include “Bolt” from Disney — which always has a big release bowing over the Turkey Day play period — and DreamWorks/Paramount’s “The Soloist,” a drama about the relationship between Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.) and a violin-playing homeless man (Jamie Foxx).

Bond films tend to get an earlier jump in the U.K., and “Solace” will receive its world premiere October 29 in London, two days before its U.K. opening.

Prince William and Prince Harry will attend the world premiere,” Sony said.
