“Cowboy chic” is France’s new Hermes style

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Wearing a black Stetson, she walks straight out from the desert, scantily clad in black wide-cleavage dress, tightened at the waist by sturdy superimposed belts and adorned with studded leather bracelets.

Jean-Paul Gaultier, the enfant terrible of French fashion and star designer at Hermes, imagined next summer’s woman as trigger-happy adventurer dressed as if she were about to shoot down an opponent in front of a saloon bar.

And her no-nonsense attitude makes her all the more sensual, say his fans.

“Jean-Paul loves women and dresses us in a feminine and very sensual way,” super-model Stephanie Seymour, who opened the show wearing an elegant white shirt, straight pants and suede hat, told Reuters.

“I thought it was like a chic Pocahontas,” Seymour added about the collection.

Strutting in Seymour’s footsteps was fellow super-model Naomi Campbell, wearing a flamboyant red dress that barely covered her body and revealed a sexy red bikini bottom.

Amid an Arizona desert-themed decor, complete with sand and cactuses, Campbell threw out her cowboy hat to a cheering crowd against a backdrop of Western-style music.

“I did not go to Santa Fe,” Gaultier told Reuters. “It was only in my head.”

Gaultier’s 2009 spring/summer “cowboy chic” collection offered a new interpretation of Hermes’s equestrian roots — the fashion house started as a saddle maker.

Recurring items included crocodile-skin bustiers and jackets, fringed ponchos and floppy sand-colour suede hats.

But many other accessories such as tall leather boots and soberly cut leather bags, remained faithful to the classic Hermes style.

“I generally prefer men’s clothes but there was a little black dress in there that I would have liked,” actress and singer Jane Birkin, who admits to wearing Hermes cashmere scarves regularly, told Reuters.

Broker turned monk offers home truths to needy

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Brother Nikanor, a Nasdaq broker turned monk, advises former colleagues to put a jar with soil on their desks to remind them where we are all heading and what matters in life.As western banks fold into each other like crumpled tickets and commentators portray the current crisis as the last gasp of modern capitalism, Hristo Mishkov, 32, shares the pain — and offers home truths.

His story partly resembles that of Brother Ty, the monk-tycoon protagonist of the 1998 satire “God is my Broker” by U.S. writers Christopher Buckley and John Tierney — he failed on Wall Street and became a monk.

But 10 years later, the similarities are superficial: the Bulgarian had a successful broking career, does not write self-help manuals and aims to get happy, not rich.

His interest in financial markets began under communism in the 1980s when he and other children created their own play stock exchange in their apartment block’s basement in Sofia.Five years ago, after failing to find happiness in the life he lived, the Christian Orthodox who hadn’t practiced as a child quit the New York-based market for a dilapidated Bulgarian monastery that once served as a communist labor camp.

Retaining one luxury — a mobile phone, which connects him with both potential donors and former trading colleagues — he has brought the rigor of his broking experience to his faith.

He has helped to raise hundreds of thousands of levs (dollars) to rebuild the monastery — a hard task in a country where charity is not part of the mentality and building shopping malls and golf courses is a priority.

“Many people… in the world do not realize that they have not earned the food they eat, that they take without giving,” Mishkov said. “But if someone consumes more than they have earned, it means someone else is starving.

“It is right to see people who consume more than they deserve shattered by a financial crisis from time to time, to suffer so that they can become more reasonable.”

Being a trader has seldom been more traumatic: placing bets on political decisions about billion-dollar bank bailouts which, if they fail, could mean much more than a bad day for yourself or colleagues, but also jeopardize livelihoods.

Some have found solace in religion, others in humor, but a few fall. Surveys show traders reporting more stress and every news report of a trader suicide is accompanied by suggestions the pressure may have…

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Leonardo DiCaprio says he’s not ready to be a father.

The 33-year-old actor, who has an on-and-off relationship with model Bar Refaeli, says he has no plans at the moment to settle down and start a family.

“Ah, how do you answer something like that? So, um, I am being asked to look in the future I suppose quickly. No, I don’t have any plan,” says the famously private star, who has been promoting his upcoming film, “Body of Lies.”

DiCaprio co-stars with Russell Crowe in the CIA thriller directed by Ridley Scott.

His screen credits also include “Romeo and Juliet” and “Titanic.” He received Oscar nominations for his roles in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” “The Aviator” and “Blood Diamond.”

DiCaprio can’t seem to shake his heartthrob status.

“That’s the only way I like to be referred to,” he joked recently. “When I walk on set it’s in the contract.”

“Body of Lies” will be in theaters Oct. 10.

Brit women spend 29m pounds a year on high heels heals!

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

High heels not only damage your feet but also leave a hole in the pocket, reveals a new report, which has found that the sexy footwear costs 29million pounds a year in foot operations to repair the damage.

It has been revealed that thousands of Brit women get costly corrective surgery, as they cannot walk properly after years floundering on stiletto or wedge heels.

Operations like bunion removal can cost 4,000 pounds - with the total number of women having the surgery adding up to 10.5million pounds per year, reports The Sun.

According to a study conducted by NHS consultant podiatrist Emma Supple, other operations like toe straightening costs 10.4million pounds at 1,200 pounds a time, less common procedures such as big toe joint replacement, corn treatment or surgery on trapped nerves also cost millions of pounds a year.

“While we love our high heels, wearing them for prolonged periods is bad news for our health and wallets,” Emma said.

“We need to mix and match our choice of footwear to allow our bodies time to recover,” she added.

The study revealed that four in ten women have high heel accidents.

Saint-Emilion toasts tradition while clouds gather

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Wine growers toasted the 1199 creation of the Saint-Emilion Jurade this month with a pageant and tasting.

But with the latest classification in disarray and the harvest not looking brilliant the question is whether the future will be as grand as the past.

The Jurade, or guild, was created by a charter signed by English King John I, or John Lackland Duke of Normandy, in the days when Aquitaine and Normandy were under English rule.

Nowadays the guild aims to preserve its traditions but also promote the sale of wine across France and abroad from a region that is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The 60th anniversary of the 1948 resurrection of the Jurade was not without its hiccups. Guest of honour Prince Albert II of Monaco could not make it and vintners remain divided over the failure of the 2006 classification.

Saint-Emilion renews the classification of its wines every 10 years, unlike the 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines which has remained constant since it was set in the 19th century.

But the July 1 suspension of Saint-Emilion’s 2006 classification has meant that vintners have had to tear labels from any bottles mentioning the classification and slammed eight growers who had been included from this area of 5,400 hectares east of Bordeaux in south west France.

In early August, French parliament adopted a legal amendment allowing the 1996 classification to remain in force until 2009.

MASQUERADE

“It is a masquerade and a profound injustice to those people that have worked hard,” said one of the newly included growers, Dominique Hebrard of Chateau Bellefond-Belcier.

He and seven other “victims” have started legal proceedings to arrive at a solution.

The French state has also appealed, aware of the importance of the reputation of its wine industry and the need for quality labels in a world market where there is increasing competition from new world wines made in South America, South Africa, Australasia, the United States and now also China.

“We are trying to see with the lawyers how we can integrate them into the classification,” said Jean-Francois Quenin, president of the Saint-Emilion wine council.

“There is real damage for us. We hope that a solution can be found soon,” said Hebrard. “Today, it’s our passion for wine that keeps us going. I will continue to fight to make quality wines. Yes, I am still very angry but the climate in Saint-Emilion needs to become more peaceful one day,” he added.

A wine auction earlier this month raised 57,000 euros ($83,190) for a leprosy charity in India as mediaeval-style musicians played into the evening before a large fireworks display.

Guild members also held a procession on Sept 21 in their red robes through the narrow streets of the village to the church where a service was held and new members sworn in.

That afternoon, the official start of the harvest was proclaimed but the real harvest will still take some time.

Abundant late sun can still help to improve a year that has not benefited from good weather conditions.

The 2006 classification had 15 Premier Grand Crus Classees and 46 Grand Crus Classees out of 91 candidates.

Between the disputed 2006 classification and the expired 1996 classification there was no change in the top Premiers Grand Crus Classes A sector — those are still the family-owned Chateau Ausone and Chateau Cheval Blanc.

A Cheval Blanc of the year 2000 sells for 1,350 euros per bottle and the Chateau Ausone 2000 sells for 3,490 euros per bottle. But one can still buy a Saint-Emilion wine for under 20 euros ($29).

Kate Moss hassled by costumed cowboys at West End club

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

English model Kate Moss was hassled by two unruly party revellers dressed in cowboy costumes while she was having drinks in a posh West End club.

The incident, which happened at the Vendome bar in London’s Knightsbridge on September 25, involved the two rowdies trying to get close to the Croydon-born supermodel, the Mirror reported.

The two, who were wearing Stetsons and cowboy shirts, had barged into the VIP area, and when bar staff saw that Moss was in, they rushed in along with the club bouncers to rescue her.

The ‘cowboys’ were grabbed and hustled out of the club, scattering shocked revellers and sending drinks flying in the process.

After the incident quietened down, Moss, 34, was seen going back to drinking her 300 pounds a bottle Dom Perignon to toast the launch of film production company Britflick.

Golden touch

Partly based on his own experience in life, Goldie Behl’s forthcoming release Drona is about discovering one’s destiny. “The idea behind making this film was simple and basic.

I am sure everybody thinks that way,” says Goldie who was brave enough to visualize his thoughts on the big screen. He decided to work on the idea at the time of his son’s birth.

We get just a fraction of the budget that a Hollywood movie gets for its special effects. But we have tried our level best to give it our best shot,” Goldie retorts.

The film is out and out Indian. “The visuals are truly Indian but have been filmed by renowned international technicians,” he said.

AB’s the man As for the cast of the movie, Abhishek Bachchan was a real first choice for the role of Aditya. “Not just this film, I will approach Abhishek for all my future projects.

He is my brother,” said Goldie. “I discussed the philosophy behind the film with him and he liked it.

He himself is carrying forward a legacy, so is best suited for the role.” Drona, with its once-upon-a-time feel, is an easy watch that promises entertainment.

Go and have fun for two hours, is the director’s take for the audiences.

Aural wells keep Irish, Aussie pub patrons in tune

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Pub patrons in Sydney and Ireland are making friends and finding loved ones by shouting down wells set up by an Australian artist at opposite ends of the earth.

Irish and Australian beer drinkers have been tuned in since artist Allan Giddy set up his “sonic well” installation which transmits live sounds from the pub at Sydney’s Mercantile Hotel and Ryan’s Bar in Cobh, a coastal town in southwestern Ireland.

“There have been people singing songs into it, telling stories, there’s even been an attempt at sex, God knows how that works,” Giddy told Reuters.

The installation involves two traditional stone wells set up outside each bar. Waterproof speakers and microphones are fitted inside the wells and the sounds are broadcast via Internet technology and a voice-over-Web program. Computers inside the pubs operate it all.

Given their location Giddy said everything was designed to be able to take beer spills and cigarette butts.

“I chose the two closest watering holes to where the majority of Irish immigrants who left home and arrived in Australia are located,” said Giddy.

“It’s kind of like a pair of baked beans tins and a piece of string, if you are standing at one you can hear the sounds coming from the other and visa versa,” he added.

Giddy said he was inspired by the fact that historically, water sources like wells or billabongs were pivotal meeting points for communities around the world.

While there was some scepticism in Cobh, with locals calling it a hoax, Giddy said the bar patrons finally embraced it.

And in Sydney, the installation has also proved a popular, albeit very loud, attraction.

“It can get a bit noisy early in the morning here as it’s late at night in Ireland, makes it hard for the offices across the street having meetings, but what can you do,” said a barman at the Mercantile Hotel.

Both wells were constructed in early September and will be in operation until October 8.

Javine Hylton in cop trouble over foul-mouthed voicemail tirade

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

British singer Javine was hauled in by the cops after leaving a voicemail full of obscene language for her ex-manager.

According to the Sun, Javine was allegedly ’screaming like a lion’ at Camilla Storey, who fearing for her life, reported the incident to the police.

Consequently, the 26-year-old singer was let off with a warning from the authorities.

The pair are said to have had professional difficulties after the career of Javine slowed down.

The singer, who famously represented UK topping the 22nd position at the ‘Eurovision Song Contest 2005′, was once threatened with an alleged knife by hubby MC Harvey following an argument between the two.
